Hello everybody this is the first installment of what will be a weekly column from me, Thomas the St Pats Prems and Reserves GoalKeeper. Hopefully I will keep (pun?) this up although Phil may edit me away one day. Yep I’m the one wearing the different coloured clothes and picking the ball up with my hands. It’s nice to be special.
Well this weekend was a momentous one for our little club. The week when the Prems toppled the might of the evil empire a.k.a. Quakers Hill. The field was angry that day my friends, we stood up to Quakers looked them straight in the eye and said Easy big fella! And from then on we preceded to destroy Quakers Hill. Our defence of Nathan, Danny, Martin, Mark and Kevin were like an unbreakable wall. So good that the evil empires thugs could only achieve one shot on target. All other shots endangered the trees in the field behind the goal more then the back of the net. Forest conservationists would have been more worried then I was. Our midfield scurried or in Mark’s place scampered all over the place cutting off attacks and fueling our own attacks. The forward line of Phil (the webmaster) Ben and Dave in the second half constantly gave the evil empires defence line troubles. The goals were scored by Phil and by sweeper Nathan. Phil’s was and incredibly hard indirect free kick straight through the wall. Nathan’s just came out of the blue it must have been 40 yards out even after our coache’s insistence that we should shoot from no further out then 20 yards, Nathan just stepped up and had a crack straight into the top corner. Anyway I shouldn’t talk about the game too much as that is Phil’s place in his match reports, I’m sure everyone enjoys his distinctive style….
The celebrations after this game were quite amazing, lots of hugging and shaking of hands (the shaking of hands I didn’t enjoy as my hand had been severely whack by an on coming thug, I mean forward, typing hurts at the moment). I am not sure what the Quakers Hill players would have thought, they are celebrating after just beating us once?, well what do we care we had fun. There were some photos taken of our wild celebrations and hopefully they can be put up on this web site
Unfortunately our unbeaten reserves suffered their first loss, we had the chance to put the game away but unfortunately we didn’t take them. I mentioned earlier that Keepers were special because they were allowed to use their hands, perhaps I was a little wrong if this weekend is anything to go by. We saw Stephen Henchoz play a bit of travelling keeper in the FA cup final and a quakers hill forward catch the ball, place it on his foot and score a goal. Perhaps the Blacktown referee was taking his cue from a so called professional. Well I guess we should all take tips off our superiors. I am also partly to blamed for this loss as I didn’t deal with a cross that I should of, this lead to goal. In my defence I am only a baby at this keeping caper, being a center back was a much simpler life, see forward tackle forward kick ball far away. In this game Billy Hill did a wonderful impression of Ryan Giggs by dribbling around the opposition 3 times and then scoring, though I am sure Billy would prefer me to compare him to Patrik Berger.
While I am ranting (isn’t that what columns are for, if I rant well enough maybe the telegraph will give me a job). I will comment on the amazing lack of sportsmanship in our sport now, say the other team has a throw in is it too hard to not kick the ball further away, is it so difficult to pass it back somewhere near where the free kick or throw is to be taken. This is very irritating, its not like we are playing for our lives.
Anyway, this week our mighty team travel to Panania for state cup, I have no idea where this is. It sounds suspiciously like a small eastern European county where vampires may or may not live. In any case I will tell the team to keep an eye on their necks. Hopefully we will vanquish this team of the undead and then go on to win the state cup. Sounds like a good plan I think.
Oh well I have gone on for far too long I think and Phil will probably edit this severely. I hope my hand heals, as I am the only goalkeeper at the moment. All you Liverpool supporters should get too cocky either, enjoy your moment in the sun while it lasts. Bring on Panania and bring on Rooty Hill after that, Go Scary Pirates (my basketball team) and um Thankyou and Goodnight.
